| AFIS Sadden over Phillip Island Tragedy |
|
The Australian Federation Of International Students (AFIS) responded with sadness to the tragedy yesterday when two students from Pakistan were helplessly swept off the rocks of Phillip Island. "The AFIS executive is deeply saddened by this tragedy. I extend my utmost sympathy to family and friends of Omer Habib and Wasim Akram as they go through this difficult time of uncertainty. I hope that they will be found safe and unharmed," expressed Wai Ken Wong, President of Australian Federation Of International Sudents New South Wales. "I take this opportunity to call for more programs to raise awareness on water safety precautions amongst the international student community. Three months ago a wave claimed the lives of two Indian students on a Surf Coast beach at Hutt Gully and now two students have been tragically washed away. We have to do whatever we can to reduce or even avoid repeats of such misfortunate incidents," said Mr. Wong. "I was glad to see at this year's semester one orientation programs that more institutions have included water safety as part of their presentations, but sincerely hope to see all institutions take on the initiative in upcoming semesters," said Mr. Wong.
