Federal roundtable timely, if not already too late

The Australian Federation of International Students (AFIS) applauds the announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education to establish a Federal roundtable tasked to discuss the mounting number of international student issues.

AFIS believes that a cross-examination at the Federal level is appropriate and comes not a moment too soon – if not already a little too late.

Over the past year, AFIS has witnessed, received and addressed the concerns and needs of a growing number of international students unable to afford basic living necessities – some facing homelessness, and still others unable to even afford daily meals.

The number of alleged assaults and purported anti-social behaviour towards international students has also been on the rise.

Furthermore, an increase in the number of opportunistic, commercial-interest practices that contravene with the very basic instruction for an international student to gain and demand for first-contact representation and support from his or her educational institution are considerable grounds for concern. These are dire causes for alarm.

AFIS contends that it is prudent for the Federal government to bring action out of its proposed discussions without any further delay. An informed, collaborative, coordinated approach involving the education sector, student bodies and government bodies, must be developed to protect this crucial industry.

Interest in AFIS’ position on social inclusion, industry regulation and international student representation are welcome and enquiries should be directed to the media contact below.
