| Outcome of Senate Inquiry positive; action now needed |
|
The Australian Federation of International Students (AFIS) endorses the Senate Inquiry into the Welfare of International Students report released 26 November 2009, but renews the call for an adequate level of resources to be allocated to independent student support services. ‘The document is worthy of the time and effort committed by the working committee and the advisory groups and individuals consulted. Overall, the recommendations of the Committee are appropriate. We are satisfied to see the key issues recognised and addressed,’ said AFIS Honorary President Ms Wesa Chau. ‘With regards to the Committee’s recommendation on public transport concession, we are hopeful that the State governments of NSW and Victoria will heed the evidence-backed advice provided by the Committee. We will continue engaging with and advocating to the State governments for this cause. ‘Many international students, including those from our committees, are very happy with the public transport concession findings and recommendations. 'AFIS also commends the Committee on the recommendations around improving information provision offshore, and urges the government to consult with student organisations to ensure the information provided is culturally appropriate. ‘However, our membership has been anticipating a recommendation to boost support of independent student services provision alongside the recommendation for an Ombudsman. ‘Too many international students are seeking support for the issues they face every day; AFIS alone services a deluge of over 8,000 students annually. In many instances, students do not feel comfortable approaching an ‘authority’ as their first point of call and feel that in doing so, will be placing their visa in jeopardy. There is a currently unmet need for quality, adequately-funded independent student services that can mediate between the student and the system. ‘Keeping in mind the need for adequate funding of independent student support services, AFIS now urges the governments to accept the Committee’s recommendations. We look forward to implementation. Action is what we’re looking for now.’ |
